More and more private individuals are becoming victims of identity theft and identity fraud today. Modern technology and the internet make it easier for fraudsters to access personal data and forge documents. Using the forged identities, fraudsters purchase goods online, open accounts, or apply for loans. This identity fraud can lead to significant problems for affected individuals, especially in financial transactions.
Fraud prevention
The German Protection Portal (DSPortal) by CRIF was developed for fraud prevention. Early detection of fraud indicators helps both consumers/applicants and banks/financial service providers. The DSPortal enables financial service providers to exchange information in a structured and data protection-compliant manner regarding indications of criminal acts by individuals or companies. Every consumer is informed by a bank before it queries the DSPortal.
Victim protection – an important task of the DSPortal
The DSPortal becomes relevant for private individuals when identity theft occurs. Until now, victims in Germany had no way to report centrally and thus protect themselves from further misuse.
This changes with the establishment of the DSPortal. In the event of identity theft, any consumer can report themselves as a victim to the DSPortal. Self-reporting is done in writing with proof of identity. Loan applications are then examined more closely by banks and financial service providers to determine whether it is actually the victim or the perpetrator.
